Loudspeaker is a three year project based at Nottingham Contemporary and in partnership with the community charity, Changing Lives. Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Loudspeaker aims to raise the voices and aspirations of local women through contemporary art.

The project is split into the various strands (some of which are outlined below) which overlap to create a network of opportunities for local women.

Artist led workshops – Ten week blocks of workshops introduce women to contemporary art giving them the opportunity to engage with international exhibitions. Guided by our Associate Artists, Gillian Brent and Jo Dacombe, the group discuss themes and ideas within the artworks before formulating their own opinions and creative responses.

Mentoring opportunities – After participating in the artist-led workshops women are invited to return and volunteer as mentors, supporting other women and developing their own skills and work experience.

Accreditation – Alongside the workshops, the women are also able to achieve an OCN Level 1 qualification in Personal Identity and Self Esteem through documenting their journeys and personal development in sketchbooks.

Events – At the end of every block of workshops the women host their own celebration events where they are able to share the outcomes of the project with their family, friends and peers.

Public Awareness strand Towards the end of the first year of the project, guest artist Polly Brannan will be working with the women to create a piece of art which will be publically disseminated and give voice to their concerns within the wider community.

Schools – In the second and third years of the project the women are given the opportunity to work with a Schools Advisory Group to develop a resource that will feed into Nottingham’s local school framework and emphasise the importance of social awareness and raising aspirations in Nottingham’s future generations.

Overall, this complex and innovative project offers women the opportunity to use contemporary art as a vehicle for personal and social change.
